Tamiya Sprays Vs. Topcoat

Picked this up from a local hobby store. Haven't tried Tamiya's line of spray finishes, I've only used Mr. Hobby's Topcoat in the past. This one here I think is the equivalent of a gloss Topcoat (there's a flat Tamiya too, maybe even a semi-gloss).

So, has anyone tried these sprays from Tamiya? I'm curious to know how they stack up to the infamous (since now mostly unavailable in the US) Topcoat. Of course, I could just try it out myself, but that will have to wait for now (I need a suitable model to test it on). I hope it's good, cause then I'd have a renewable and cheaper replacement for Topcoat!

  1. Hmm. I've been using Testor's Dull Cote (their flat coat sprays). About 4 or 5 dollars from my HobbyTownUSA. But despite it being a "lacquer" paint, it scratches really easily. Maybe it's because I'm using it on bare plastic... =/

    Any advise?

  2. Hmm yeah, I looked into those as well. Do you know how those compare to Topcoat? Maybe you can try to spray a layer or two more. Topcoat can scratch kind of easily too

  3. No I haven't used any other topcoat, although some people have used Krylon's flat coat since it comes in a bigger can.

  4. I have a can of Tamiya Semi-gloss (TS-79). While I've tested it on a random pieces, I haven't really used it on an entire model before so it's hard for me to tell you the results. Not to mention it is semi-gloss... so the effect is really not that apparent on the semi-gloss bare plastic ^^;

  5. Haha, yeah I don't really get what semi-gloss is for... I assumed it just looked like bare plastic like you said. Guess that could be useful though, I just don't think I'll be using my can anytime soon...

  6. I recommend Tamiya Clear (flat) because I've used it even when it's raining. It didn't experience frosting yet whereas I've experienced it with Mr.Super Clear (flat). I haven't used Mr. Topcoat (flat) yet so I don't know the difference between the two.
