MG Sazabi 1st WIP

To my surprise, I received this rather large kit from my girlfriend on Valentine's Day. She got a diamond, I got a giant red Sazabi; seems like a pretty fair deal to me! So yeah, this is going to be my next project. Continuing the painting trend set forth by Deathscythe, I'm planning on airbrushing the whole kit in some custom colors. This will be my first time using an airbrush (I don't even have it yet) so I'm sure I'll mess up lots and hopefully it will be a good learning experience. I'm not 100% on the colors I'm going to use yet. I'll most likely spray some colors and see how they look first (I'm thinking light vermilion armor, dark bronze highlights, and a metallic black frame).

I've just straight built it with a loose fitting so that I can disassemble it later. All the nubs are filed and sanded down. It's nothing special to look at right now, but I thought I should have a set of 'before' photos to compare it to when it's all finished, so here's a 360:

This thing is definitely huge. Head height is a little above Sinanju (although shorter when measured against Sinanju's thrusters), and a lot above all the rest. As always, RX-78-2 size comparison:

Looking forward to messing with the airbrush. The hand parts and some of the cable pieces are polycap material (there's also some visible polycaps on the back fuel tanks) and I'm not sure how those will react to paint. I'm not sure if I should prime all the pieces first. I'll be using Tamiya acrylic paints as the main coat, so maybe I should... I don't know, these be uncharted waters.

MG XXXG-01D Deathscythe EW Review

Finally done! Since the last update, I finished putting the final bit of decals on and finshed spraying the last parts with topcoat. Just finished up taking a bunch of photos and editing them (had a hard time getting lighting right). Oh right, I also decided to paint the head armor dark blue instead of white. Not sure what the correct colors are (although it came molded in white) but I think the darker color suits it more (like Deathscythe Hell). As noted before, the dark blue (which looks pretty much like black with the flat finish) still looks a little rough, but that's due to the mica part of the paint. A couple more layers of topcoat did help to smooth it out, and it looks different (better) in person than in photos. Oh, also got an acrylic plastic base thing... reflective!

All the armor pieces have a flat finish, while the inner frame, and all grey pieces, are gloss coated. I think I'll keep this convention with all future kits, the texture contrast is kind of interesting.

On the topic of shoulders and arms, the pegs that connect the body to the arms is a little short. While trying to move the arms around, they usually just pop off the peg, which is pretty annoying for posing. Not sure if this just for my kit since the joints are a little stiffer from the paint, or if it's a general problem. To avoid it, it's a lot easier to just take the arm off to pose it (it's easy enough to take on and off).

Buster Shield:

As you can see, the pincers open and close (kept symmetrical with a gear). The shield fits onto the arm with a pretty solid peg, there's no chance of it falling off, and it's not too heavy such that the arms sags. The beam effect part, which I gave one coat of clear green, fits pretty snug, it's not going to fall out either.

As you probably know, this kit employs the use of hand parts switching. There are basically three sets: closed fist, open fingers, and hands to hold the scythe. I suppose it makes sense for a small kit, but I wish they just made smaller versions of Gundam 2.0 hands (the ones with individual moving fingers).

Holding the scythe is a bit of a hassle since the hand pegs doesn't work well at all points on the length of the scythe. The plastic has bowed out a little so that the area in the middle is not snug enough for the peg, while the areas at the top and bottom hold the peg firmly. It's not a game breaker though, since the thumb still does a pretty good job holding it in place. Sorry for the awkward scythe poses, not really sure what wielding it should look like...

Yeah, it's possible to get the scythe in both hands, but it'll definitely take a while to get it right (although, maybe it was just me failing). With the beam effect part in, the scythe can be a little heavy and the arm can sag a little in certain positions.

Dual wielding!

Ah, haven't really talked about the legs or feet. For the most part, they're pretty stable, no loose joints or anything (although all my joints are painted). Wide stances can be a little hard to pose, just have to make sure its balanced well, but that's to be expected. The feet are large enough to keep the model balanced when just standing. Overall, good leg design, probably my favorite part of the kit. Spikes!

As I said earlier, the head sensors do a good job lighting up when back lit. Since I'm not going to just leave a lamp on behind it all the time, I probably won't see this light up effect much, but I bet a base with an LED or something could be thrown together.

Finally, a size comparison with RX-72-2:

It's definitely on the smaller side of the MS spectrum, but it's not tiny either. Pretty sure all the Gundam Wing suits are about this size.

So that's it! First entirely painted kit. As I've mentioned, I wanted to try this method out since I felt like bare plastic models, while top coated, were a little bare or not unique. While I mostly kept the same color scheme, all the shades are a little tweaked: The dark blue is darker, the white is brighter, the red and yellow are darker, and the grey is darker and metallic. It was also the first time using acrylic thinned down as a panel liner. Overall it worked pretty well, but there weren't too many lines to test it on. The paint I used (Tamiya TS sprays) was glossy so I had to use more flat finish than usual. It was definitely a learning experience, but I think I'll continue this method for future kits and maybe redoing my other kits (the ones without decals yet (Sinanju)). This is probably my favorite work yet!

Quick Deathscythe Update

Got the upper half decal-ed and flat coated (although some pieces might need another coat). The above photo is in reply to Z who asked how far the head can tilt down in the last post. Hope that helps!

The strange background is my computer monitor, which turned bright cyan when I adjusted the white parts on Deathscythe to actually be white... So had, to adjust some levels to fix that. But you can see that with a back light the head sensors can be lit up since its just one clear piece. I know this isn't new, other kits have this, but it was noticeable on this kit.

First time stripping a kit down to the inner frame. Didn't really do any detail work, just sprayed the parts that might be visible gun metal. Looks neat though!

Deathscythe Update

Quick update on Deathscythe progress. Just finished up spray painting all the parts and panel lining. Put all the parts together and look, a Gundam! Next step is to topcoat and add decals, then add a final layer of flat topcoat. I thought I might keep the glossy look in the end, since it looks good in person, but it really does't transfer to photos well. But yeah, here's the completed model as of now:

Legs look pretty neat. Backpacks pretty basic but adds a lot to the model overall

Deathscythe EW Torso

Got the torso completed for my MG Gundam Deathscythe EW kit. Tamiya spray paints arrived in the mail so I was able to test them out and get a couple batches of parts painted. I used TS-38 Gunmetal for the inner frame, TS-64 Dark Mica Blue and TS-26 Pure White for the armor, and TS-8 Italian Red and TS-34 Camel Yellow for the detail parts. Since these are all lacquer spray paints, I decided panel lining with acrylic paint and thinner would be safest on the paint job and easiest.

Not much to panel line on the torso, just the neck piece and the red cockpit part. Still haven't got the ratio of paint to thinner yet so it took a couple layers of the grey paint to stick. Simple cockpit hatch door:

Duo has no face!! Ahhhhh! ...Yeah, eyes were too small to paint.

Working on the arms and waist next. Have to wait until I get some glue to complete the legs as one of the inner frame bits is snapped (maybe it came that way? Probably not...)

So far liking the painted feel and look. Maybe I'll give it a gloss coat when it's done... Hmmm...

Tamiya Sprays Vs. Topcoat

Picked this up from a local hobby store. Haven't tried Tamiya's line of spray finishes, I've only used Mr. Hobby's Topcoat in the past. This one here I think is the equivalent of a gloss Topcoat (there's a flat Tamiya too, maybe even a semi-gloss).

So, has anyone tried these sprays from Tamiya? I'm curious to know how they stack up to the infamous (since now mostly unavailable in the US) Topcoat. Of course, I could just try it out myself, but that will have to wait for now (I need a suitable model to test it on). I hope it's good, cause then I'd have a renewable and cheaper replacement for Topcoat!

Hiatus Over? Shin Musha Time!

Happy New Year everyone! Actually, by now I don't expect many people to read this blog (well I know Z just recently checked it). But yeah, it's been a while since my last post, almost 4 months! Hopefully some other readers will find their way back somehow. Regardless, I'll try to update more regularly now. I have a couple projects that I'm working on now, the MG Shin Musha and the RG RX-78-2. The former I started before I left for Japan, the latter after I got back, so it's been a while since I've worked on anything in both cases. Not much to show for the Real Grade, but here's what Shin Musha looks like so far:

I used Tamiya Gold spray paint as the original "gold" plastic wasn't too good. Pretty sure that was the first time using spray paint for Gunpla, and I must say it's pretty nifty. I'm planning on exclusively using spray paints for all colors in the future in order to add a custom look and to make the Gunpla process more involved. For some reason the look of my unpainted straight plastic kits don't appeal to me much anymore (save for my MG RX-78-2, hence my re-ordering on the left side bar). But, I'm still liking the Shin Musha so far, hopefully I can get it done soon!

Planning on starting MG Deathscythe soon once I get all the spray paints, although I guess I can start prepping all the parts now. Then after that, PG RX-78-2! (Even though I stopped building, apparently I didn't stop buying Gunpla...)

Just downloaded the Gundam 00 movie fansub! Maybe I should get a season 2 refresher...

A Little RX-78-2 Rework

Decided to get rid of the eye sticker for my older RX-78-2 kit. I saw how good clear eyes could look on the Shin Musha I'm working on and had to go back and paint them. Used flat black and clear yellow. Fortunately the clear eye piece is thin enough that I could paint white onto the back, behind the eyes so that they reflect better. Some clear eye pieces aren't like this and are more like a solid block (like MG Blue Astray as I recall). If you try to paint those eyes clear they'll probably just end up dark. Also added another layer of Topcoat for no reason.

Haven't got the lighting down yet (shooting in a new environment). I'll just keep messing around with lamps and stuff. Maybe I can't let natural light interfere... Hmmm

You can see the clear eyes pretty well in the right shot above. Wish all MGs could have eyes like that!

Core Booster Victory!

Still alive in Japan! Picked this up today from the big department store, Yodobashi Camera, in Akihabara. Decided to get this (and probably RG RX-78-2) because I'm fairly sure I can fit them in my carry-on when I fly home next week. That was my main concern, just not having enough space in my luggage to bring stuff back, but hopefully those two boxes are thin enough. The price was really good too, 1610 yen, almost 30% off. No shipping fee either!

Hopefully I'll get some other things tomorrow as well (they were sold out of the RG RX-78-2 today).

Gunpla in Akiba

Went in to Tokyo today with a friend and ended up in Akihabara. Went into Yodobashi Camera first to check out their toys and games floor. I've been there before, but that was 3 years ago when I didn't know much about Gundam or model kits. As you can see above, they have one wall dedicated to Master Grades and Perfect Grades on the bottom. The other side of the aisle had all the High Grades. Didn't notice all the kits last time I was here 2 years ago, or maybe they've amped up stock for the ongoing 30th anniversary. Not really planning on buying anything since it would be difficult to bring back home. I might if I see a good deal though... I can always ship it back.

They had some completed models on display as well. As I took the photo one employee rushed over to inform me that photos were not allowed. So I dejectedly said "gomennasai" and walked away... Got the photo though! Not that it was anything special, looks like some MG on the first and second shelves, 1/100 NGs on the bottom.

Some more displayed Gunplas in another store (not sure if photography was allowed, at least no one yelled at me). These were interesting to see as I've never seen Perfect Grades in person before. Somehow they're a little larger than I expected (a PG 00 Raiser looked massive), so maybe now I'll have to pick up a PG RX-178 or RX-78 to really experience the scale first hand.

Second photo is at an escalator after the Gunpla floor. Runners! Sorry it's blurry, took it quickly since I still didn't want to get yelled at. Can't really make out which kits they're from (the blurriness doesn't help).

Gunpla seems more popular now than it was before (but maybe I'm just noticing it now). Either way, nice to see it all over. Lot's of hobby tools and paints on sale too. Still not planning on buying anything while I'm here, but maybe I'll break down and get something my 6th week. Definitely have to get some Topcoat though.

Leaving for Japan!

Wow, I really did mean to update my blog before I left, but I guess that won't happen... Where did all the time go? So yeah, I'm leaving for Tokyo tomorrow, going to be staying there for 6 weeks! Not sure what I'm going to be doing there exactly, aside from seeing a friend who lives there... but it should be good! Maybe I'll get to see the 1/1 Gundam at Fuji.

The things that I would have like to have posted would be: MG Wing Gundam which is all constructed and requiring decals, and MG Shin Musha Gundam which is almost entirely constructed. Maybe I can get that done when I get back, or maybe Gunpla will sort of phase out of my life a little bit... seems like it already has in the past couple months. I might not really get a chance to do any more this next year. So, who knows, maybe I'll come back in full force in a couple years! Or sooner! That's a long time, I know, but I still have lots of kits left to do!

To my small reader base, thank you for all the comments and support. I started this blog with no intention of anyone reading it, something of a hobby journal I suppose, so I was surprised and grateful when people began to comment. I know readers have probably dropped off by now because of my inactivity over the last month or so, but I hope this message gets to you. GN-X Awaits Decals

Finally done with the school year! Finished my last final yesterday, now I just have to move out of my apartment by Monday. Meant to put up these photos of my GN-X a while ago when I finished building the kit. All that's left now is to wait for the water slides to be released. I'm thinking of redoing the eyes, I don't like the purple/silver mix I've used. Maybe I'll do purple mixed with white or clear purple over silver...

So overall the legs don't feel too sturdy and the feet aren't really big enough to provide much stability. Seems like this kits is meant to be displayed on a stand (like most Gundam 00 kits I imagine)

NG Hail Buster Gundam

I got this kit as a birthday present, I believe it's actually the first non Master Grade I've built. It's a non grade, 1/100 scale from Seed Vs. Astray line. Official name is LH-GAT-X103 Hail Buster Gundam. I guess it's from the manga or something? I don't know anything about the Astray series.

So anyways, the differences between MG and NG are pretty clear even though they're the same scale. The most missed features, I think, are pose-able hands, a cockpit, and an inner frame. There aren't that many moving parts or gimmicks, so no bending knee pieces or pistons. The whole kit relies heavily on polycap joints so articulation isn't the greatest. One thing that was an improvement over MGs: the two eyes were more raised from the rest of the clear face piece, making it a lot easier to paint.

Things I had to paint: Missiles red, Gatling guns titanium gold, gold bits on the chest and arms, blue circles on the waist.

So yeah, it was nice to venture outside of master grades. I imagine 1/144 HGs are pretty similar in detail and articulation. Although MGs are more expensive, I appreciate all the little details and movable parts. This was a nice kit though, can't compare it to any other NGs but it was pretty solid overall. Got to practice some painting too, which is always good. Interested to see how the new Real Grade compares to NGs and MGs. My can of topcoat ran out mid spraying, only 3 cans left!

Got my MG Wing Gundam in the mail, excited to start on that (also started watching the anime too).

3D Dot Game Heroes

So I just got this game for PS3, 3d Dot Game Heroes. As all the playable characters (and entire world) are made of pixel blocks, they let you make your own character. So of course, I just had to make a little SD RX-78-2. On the back, which you can't see, I have the beam sabers and the backpack. Since they give you some choices for attack animations, I put one of beam sabers in the hand when it attacks. Too bad I can't make the shield too!

Anyone else have this game? It's obviously not too original (except for the art style), but it's pretty fun (cheaper than most games too!)

Crossbone XM-X1 Ver. Ka Complete

Just finally added decals to my MG Crossbone Ver. Ka kit (which I finished in February). Got it topcoated and all done for photos. Like all the Ver. Ka kits, this model has a pretty decal heavy design although compared to Unicorn (and I imagine Sinanju) this wasn't too bad. Actually since it's such a small kit, there really can't be too many decals without it looking crowded. The most annoying decals, though, were on the core fighter thrusters since there were like 10 on each of the 4 sections.

Topcoating went well, think I've gotten the hang of spraying now (I'm always a little nervous since I could potentially mess up the entire kit in a couple of seconds). I tried to dust the best I could before spraying, but there are always little things that are stuck onto the kit afterwards. Maybe they just float onto when it's drying. Either way, it's pretty annoying.

Working with the kit again made me realize how bad my panel lines were. I don't think I had the proper tools when I did them (cotton swabs mainly) or I was just bad at them. I tried to fix a couple of them, but it was too much to go back and fix all of them. Regardless, I like how this kit turned out. This was also the first kit I experimented with painting metallic features so those are a little rough as well. Overall this is one of those Master Grades that require extra painting to get all the colors right. The grey parts on the weapons have to be painted (which I messed up), the yellow bits on the shoulders and core fighter have to be painted if you don't want to use the stickers, and the red slashes on the head need to be done. All these tasks were a little more daunting to me back then (probably could tackle them better now).

But yeah, glad to have this kit all done with! Happy with how it came out. As always, the topcoat really adds a lot and gives the finished product feeling. Even with all its accessories (many of which I haven't used (the cloak)), I wish it had a shield of some sort though.

GN-X Upper Half Done

Just finished the waist and arms/shoulders, which leaves only the legs and equipment left to build, so I'd say I'm about half done. These components were pretty straight forward to build, nothing complicated or special (as there aren't many gimmicks to this kit).

First here are some WIP shots, here is one of the waist binders (larger than the torso ones)

The waist unit, I painted the vernier platinum gold like the head vulcans.

The white part of the waist does a strange thing and folds down, a door can be opened to reveal the pilot (first kit that has the pilot in this location). As you can see I painted the pilot, I followed the guidelines to make him Sergei Smirnov instead of Soma Peries (she belongs in the GN Archer if that ever comes out).

Since the kit's at a significant enough state, I took a small photo shoot (no stance or anything since it has no legs and nothing to pose with!)

The arms and shoulders. I like the design of the shoulders, nice and bulky but still sleek. Hands have claws... I've watched the Gundam 00 anime, but I can't seem to remember this suit having them or if it ever used them.

Showing the waist unit's articulation, fins can fold out, vernier can face up or down.

Mr. Smirnov again. Wish the cockpit had a better interior, lots of pegs and joints just sticking out.

Still liking this kit! Legs look interesting too. Not much else to say about it, maybe that it looks a little larger than Exia. I'm still hoping Bandai releases water slide decals for this kit because as of now I only have the clear stickers (which I hate) and dry transfers (which I always mess up).

GN-X Gets Ahead

Finished the head! To keep up my trend of trying not to use the foil stickers, I painted the eyes as well as the surfaces below the purple sensor. The purple I had was a little to dark (it didn't contrast much with the black) so I mixed it with silver. I like the results for now, but I can always touch it more up later. Painted the vulcans titanium gold.

This is definitely one of the stranger head designs, especially with the jutting neck. It's a lot more monster-esque than the human-like Gundam faces or even the cyclopian Zakus. Certainly reminds me of a Unit 02 from Evangelion (see pic here). Really like the design though, really refreshing to build as I'm sure the rest of the kit will be as well.

GN-X Start!

Well, I never did finish up painting Sinanju's shield (I still plan to though), but I thought starting a new kit might get me out of my Gunpla slump. So here we have a MG GN-X torso! I thought about starting MG Zeta 2.0 but I thought the kit might be a little large to ease back into Gunpla (it's been a month after all) and plus, GN-X was the most popular on the poll!

Not much to say about this kit so far, the design is pretty simple and the torso is similar to Exia. One annoying thing is that the shoulders are loose and shake and slide front to back when moved around. Hopefully having the arms on will fix that, but otherwise it's not a big deal. Hope to get the head and waist done soon, but it might be a little slow going during the week.

Well, I'm still pretty much dead, but I thought I should add some sort of update feature since I'm still technically alive (just haven't been doing any Gunpla lately). I've added a little twitter feed on the side just to display smaller updates, updates that don't require a full blog post.

I suppose I should also address my last post. It was an April Fools joke! I guess I can't expect everyone to read the first letter of every sentence (now in bold). Actually it probably just wasn't obvious/funny enough since many of you thought it was real and liked the idea. Sorry! I'll think of a better idea for next year.

New Paint Job for Sinanju!

As I was looking at other Sinanjus on other blogs, I felt like my Sinanju should be a little more unique, so I decided a color change was in order. Painting it wasn't too bad, I just removed all the armor pieces and laid on a couple coats on gloss pink. Really like the new color, just feels right to me, and I haven't seen it been done before. I know some of you probably preferred the original red, but that was too boring! Look at that hot pink, not girly at all!

Fortunately I decided to leave the other colors alone, I thought about metallic purple instead of gold though. Of course, that would have taken a lot longer. Or maybe I could have switched the black to white, hmm, no I think the black still contrasts nicely with the pink. Luckily, I didn't mess up any parts with the paint (this was my first time spray painting a kit). Sorry I don't have any WIP photos, this whole thing was kind of spur of the moment, tell me what you think!

Sinanju's Beam Rifle

Well, since I never found that clear green part for the larger lens that I lost, I had to make some modifications. I turned around the front part of the scope and painted it titanium gold (Tamiya X-31). I had to cut off parts of the scope base since the front part didn't really like being backwards. To attach the smaller scope I just cut the backing off the old opening so it could attach at either end. Maybe it's alright I lost that piece, it had two scope lenses in the first place, I figure one is enough. I should also note that this is longest beam rifle I've made, it's basically a beam sniper rifle... with a grenade launcher.

As you can see I also painted the tube(? it's not exactly the barrel) the same titanium gold as the scope as I thought it needed some extra color. Below right you can see my makeshift lens (now facing backwards). Took me a while to file and sand it down so it could fit in there (I cut out a square from the runner). It's pretty scratched up (had to file off some text), but I think it's fine sitting in the back.

Started painting the shield, but yeah, that'll take a while.

Sinanju Build Complete!

Wow, haven't posted in a while! Sorry about that, I had finals and such a couple weeks ago, then I took a long Gundam hiatus to play some Final Fantasy XIII (damn Adamantoises). Finally started up again a couple days ago to complete Sinanju's legs. Again, letting the paint dry took the majority of the time.

Well, as you can see, I got the legs done. The gold trim parts weren't too bad here (although I was a little out of practice). I just put the pieces on the leg and painted them there as its much easier to hold the entire leg rather than just the piece. Really like the design for these, the knee has many moving parts to spread out the multiple tiers of armor as it bends. The thrusters on the sides are a nice touch, great for posing since they can rotate and point anywhere. Joints are sturdy in all places (more so than Unicorn) and not too stiff. It doesn't have any trouble standing (even with its immense weight).

Some aerial poses. Can't do much right now without any weapons, but it still poses well in the air.

I took some advice from a comment on one of the previous WIP posts (silver too bright). I tried washing the silver thrusters in black (paint and thinner). For a first time trying this, I think it turned out alright. Mostly the thinner sort of just corroded the silver paint layer and sometimes the black would pool in places. After touching it up with a little silver dry brushing, I don't think it looks too bad. They're a little less shiny and the black did a good job of filling some of the vernier panel lines.

Working on the weapons now. Unfortunately I somehow lost one the lenses (the bigger one) for the beam rifle. I managed to make a new one out of the leftover runner, but it doesn't look that great. Not sure what I'm going to do if I don't miraculously find the real part, any ideas?

Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2

I always read that this was a pretty bad game: repetitive (as all Dynasty Warrior games are), bad presentation (graphics and voice actors), and just not a whole lot of unique content. Well, I was too curious to just try it out so I found a cheap PS3 copy on Ebay.

If I didn't love Gundam, then yeah, this game would kind of suck. But, since I do, it's amazing to see 60+ different mobile suits in action with lot's of different special attacks/animations. The gameplay is pretty grindy, just keep on attacking hordes of Zakus or other grunt mobile suits until you win. There's a pretty wide range of mobile suits, ending at the Seed Destiny series (really hope they make a third game just to have Unicorn mobile suits). Haven't tried too many different characters yet, but Nu Gundam is my favorite so far (might just have to get the MG, bad proportions and all!) as it has crazy funnel attacks, i.e. funnel pyramid.

I can see this game getting old quickly, but it was definitely worth the $20. Anyone else play it? Seems like a perfect game for a Gundam fan (except for the horrible English voice acting)

Sinanju Stands on its Own

Wow, I never realized how massive this model is until it was standing in front of me. I got the inner frames for the legs and feet done so I just had to put them on. This thing is very tall (size comparisons when I'm done), it's definitely the tallest kit I have.

As for the legs and feet themselves, they are very sturdy which is nice since this model would topple over if they weren't. Feet are nice and long so the weight is evenly distributed in the front and back. The inner frame wasn't too complicated, I just have the armor to add on now (which is a little more complicated with all the thrusters on each leg as well as all the gold trimming I have to paint).

One work in progress shot for not much reason (only one I took!), feet have a nice design though.

Moved my photo set up to a place with more light, hopefully you can tell as the photos should be more detailed. Glad I got this black background, I think it contrasts nicely with Sinanju's red and gold.

Sinanju Backpack and Shoulders

Only the legs and weapons left to do now! I got the shoulders and the backpack completed a couple days ago. This is my first time shooting with a black backdrop, not too sure if I like it yet. I definitely need more light if I'm going to do it like this though, since the photos came out a little discolored and blurry. Sinanju is not quite as orange as some of the pictures suggest (below left).

The thrusters on the back really complete the unique Sinanju look. Since they're so massive, almost like wings, they add a lot to the kit as a whole (add a lot of weight to the back too). As you probably know, the thrusters move in and out as the armor shells open and close (see below)

Fuel canisters (is that what they are?) are a little annoying since they're two halves put together and the seam line is a little visible. I know I could try to remove it by cementing and sanding, but I've never tried that and I don't know how it would turn out (I don't want to mess up on this kit). The seam line isn't too bad though as there's no gap. Nub marks were a little bit of a pain on the large red and curved armor parts, took a lot of sanding.

Legs will probably take a while, they look pretty tall, complicated, and awesome (like Unicorn's). Lot's more gold trimming left to do (oh boy!)... Can't wait to get some topcoat on this model, it's too shiny!

New Page: Ma Tools

Haven't updated in a while! Well, I've been working on a "My Tools" page (which you can now check out from the row of links up there). Occasionally people have asked about some of the paints or methods I use, so I thought I would just dedicate a page to that stuff. Probably went overboard, not sure if anyones quite interested in it, but check it out if you'd like! I put a table of contents with links to jump down to their respective parts for easy access.

I also updated my Future Projects page with a couple of photos, nothing big. Sinanju's still coming along, but I might take a break to finish up decals on my Stamen kit, we'll see! Haven't done much Gunpla in the past couple of days as I've been playing Heavy Rain (on PS3). Highly recommended, play it if you have a chance! It's probably one of my favorite games (although I suppose it's actually an interactive drama).

Finished the arms (but still working on the shoulders) and the waist. I feel like the gold trimming on these pieces aren't as clean as on the torso, so I might have to clean it up more later. I don't quite understand how the arms open up to reveal the beam saber, the black part sort of gets in the way (hopefully not too much that it rubs gold paint off). Apart from that, the arms are really nice. They feel sturdy and the joints are good. The Gundam 2.0 hands are nice as always (with moving individual fingers).

Sinanju: Head and Waist Progress

Got the head completed yesterday. Thankfully there was no gold to paint (just the gun metal on the vulcans) so it was relatively quick. I must say, I really like the design for this head, it combines neat curves on the sides of the head with the angular front mask and horn. Like others have said, can't really see the eye if you don't specifically look upwards. No matter, still looks awesome.

See! The eye does exist! It also turns with the head, but pshhh, like that will ever be noticed.

Working on the waist section right now. This must have the most pieces of any waist I've built, also probably the largest. What's keeping me from finishing this up is all the paint that I need to let dry. Since the pieces are so small I have to wait for them to completely dry before even picking them up again to paint another side. I decided on a chrome silver for the thrusters instead of gunmetal, we'll see how it turns out.

Sinanju Chest Complete

Finished up the chest for Sinanju. Sure lots of gold to paint! The main emblem in the center wasn't so bad, the surface was raised enough and the piece was large enough to hold. The ones on the side of the neck were more annoying since they were smaller and more awkward to hold. I'm glad the pieces are black, that way I can clean up any excess gold paint with the black panel line marker.

The tube bits near the waist are a little loose, not sure if they're supposed to be like that. Cockpit opens in a neat way, have to lift up the emblem and open two hatches. Can't really see the pilot, Full Frontal, inside though... well, maybe his feet.

And I even painted him too!

Quick Update

Well, the poll I started several days ago showed Sinanju as the reader's choice. I admit, I'm also excited about this kit (love the design), but it's also a little intimidating (so much gold painting to do!). I was going to wait a little, maybe build the GN-X first, but I'm waiting on some purple paint. So, what the hell, I'll start on Sinanju.

As you can see, I'm not done painting these pieces yet. It seems painting gold takes a while since each part needs multiple layers. I thought I might just use the gold decals that came with the kit, but then it wouldn't match the yellow parts that I'm also painting gold. I can already tell, painting these tiny gold lines is going to get old fast (especially with the complex designs on the chest and shield). So far, so good though! Hopefully I'll get better at it as I go along.

RX-78-2 Decals and Topcoat

After starting this kit a while ago (last October) I've finally finished it up by applying water slide decals and putting on a layer of Topcoat. Glad to have it complete! I think I've finally gotten the hang of Topcoating, I didn't spray too much this time so there's no excess bits to scrape off. I like how the decals are more subtle for this kit (even more so than the RGM-79), it goes along with the basic design (which was probably the idea). However, more than half of the decals are still on the sheet after following the placement in the guide. Guess I could have added more if I wanted to, but there aren't really that many places for them to go and look good.

With beam rifle and shield. The guide didn't even show the one decal I placed on the shield, but it looked way too plain without anything.

I also finally built the other two included weapons, the Gundam hammer and the Gundam javelin(?) Painted the javelin tip clear red.

I'm really happy I got this kit finished as it's nice to have the original Gundam to compare to other designs. I think it's the best MG kit I have in terms of articulation, joint strength, proportions, and overall quality (I suppose that's to expect from a Ver. 2.0 though). Now all I have to do is build Char's Zaku 2.0 and the scene will be complete!

RX-0 Unicorn Display Base

Here's the extra item that came with the January issue of Dengeki Hobby. As you can see, it's a miniature transformable Unicorn head. When I first got it, I was surprised at how small it was (looked bigger in pictures) and I was worried the MG wouldn't fit on top. Well, it's a little wobbly and it took some adjusting and balancing but it makes a nice display stand.

I painted the eyes (black, then green), the front and back sensors green, the V-Fin gold, and the inner frame neck parts Gun Metal (I would have painted them dark grey but I don't have any!)

Overall, I'm glad I paid extensive shipping cost for the issue, this was a really unique bonus. The painting required was enjoyable as the pieces were large (no tiny bits to carefully paint). It's too bad there isn't a separate horn like the MG has since. The two halves don't come all the way together and there's a gap. Thus, I think it only looks good in Destroy mode (which is probably the preferred mode anyways).

Also, I added a poll in my Future Projects section (newly added for not much reason). I don't expect anyone to have an opinion or to vote, but I thought it might be fun to try anyways. Vote for which kit you'd like to see next! Can't say I'll listen though...

Crossbone XM-X1 Ver. Ka

Finally got around to taking a pictures! It's been a while, I know. Finished building the model not too long ago, but I've been procrastinating updating my blog.

Hm, what can I say about this model. The core fighter's four thruster arms are pretty loose, that's my major gripe. It's hard to pose them without them flailing around and loosing their position. I wish the weapon components came in both white and grey parts (instead I had to paint the grey on, which didn't come out too well).

As I've said before, this kit is pretty small in stature. Here's a photo to demonstrate:

Lastly, a photodump of my last WIP shots. I masked the parts on the weapon pieces for painting. Didn't work out that well. When I removed the tape at the end the edges of the paint were a little jagged and some paint had seeped under the tape. Maybe I'm just not doing it right... Probably won't use this method for the gold parts on Sinanju.

Mass Effect 2

Been playing ME2 a lot since it came out, thus not many Gundam updates from me (although they were slow before anyways). Above is my Commander Shepard, imported from ME1. Notice the subtle Gundam reference, the name Amuro (not quite sure why I chose it, maybe because he was a space colonist). I'm playing through with a Soldier class (think guns, lots of guns) and mostly paragon, as you can see. Great game so far, highly recommended (especially if you've played the first)

Crossbone Update (Finally!)

Been busy with classes and whatnot, so I haven't made much progress on this kit. From my last update, I've finished the arms (pictured above) and I'm currently working on the legs (got one complete).

Been doing more painting on this kit overall (mostly because it needs it in many places). I'm continuing the trend of painting the piston looking parts metallic (gold and silver). Can't really see them with the armor on in the end... but I'm glad it's done.

Hopefully I'll have another update to show soon, but with Mass Effect 2 coming out Tuesday... well, we'll see.

Crossbone X-1

Moving right along on kits (skipping decals for now). Started building the MG Crossbone X-1 Ver. Ka kit. So far it's gone pretty quickly as there aren't many pieces (it's not lacking any either) and it's pretty small in comparison to other mobile suits.

As you can see, I painted the eyes by hand as well as the red slashes on the side. Eyes were more difficult than usual as the head is so small.

Last part I've done is the waist. There was one option for the back armor panels that I wasn't sure was about. It involved an extra piece and I don't know what it was for, so I ended up skipping it.

Last Stamen WIP, Build Complete

Just finished up taking shots for the GP03 Stamen. I completed the last components yesterday (which was the left leg, the weapons, and the back fin thrusters).

Had some issues painting the green parts on the legs. Since the two leg pieces didn't come together flush, the paint didn't go on straight. In hindsight, I should have just used the sticker, then painted over that. Clear red on the beam rifle worked out well. Also, painted the pistons on the ankle chrome silver. Not quite the same as when they are actually molded in chrome, but I wanted to try it out.

Overall, the kit certainly shows it's age (cheaper plastic, worse engineering for joints and articulation). The knees are very loose for some reason and the ankles don't support much (even though they each have a screw). The inner frame for the lower legs was basically 2 halves put together, the armor was only 3 pieces. Bandai has come a long way in MG designs. Nonetheless, I like the style of this mobile suit. All the thrusters, especially the ones in back, give it a unique design.

It also came with a core fighter that can be changed into another core block, but I'd rather keep it in fighter mode.

Like most of my recent kits I'll say: Decals incoming eventually. No water slides this time! :C Like with God Gundam, I think Top Coat is really going to help this kit.

Stamen Arms Complete

Still making slow progress on my RX-78GP03S. Finished up both arms, they took a while because of the extending claw gimmick housed in each arm. Kind of awkward looking when the claw is extended and the hand is just kind of cramped up in the back.

Built only the hands that I think I'll use: Right hand is the one for grasping a rifle, Left hand is just a fist presumably for holding the shield. Check this claw action... very strange.

Stamen Update

Got the head, waist, and shoulders done. I feel good about how the eyes came out. I used some masking tape to try to paint the green on straighter which helped a bit. Photos of all sides of the waist. Pretty basic construction, although I like the red in the front and strangely shaped side armor/vent parts. Still have to do the large fin thrusters on the back.

Working on the arms now. Finished the extending grasper claw contraptions. Pretty strange, but neat I suppose? Don't think I'll ever pose with them out, but good to know they're there. Just in case, you know, something needs grasping from afar.

Stamen WIP: Torso

Started building the MG GP03S Stamen kit. Started with the core block, painted the inside of the thrusters red and the outside gun metal. Also painted the pilot (although I'm not sure what colors he was supposed to be).

This was addition with the January issue of Dengeki Hobby. It's a lot smaller than I thought it was going to be... It's probably only for the HG kit, but I hope I can still use it as a stand for the MG. Neat that they included clear parts, I thought I would have to paint the whole thing.

Didn't think I was going to get the Victory when it was first announced, but I've grown to like all the Ver. Ka releases, how the manuals and proportions are done and such. Still hate my Ver. Ka Wing Gundam though... It's dead to me.

the MG GN-X kit:

A bunch of new images have surfaced, as seen on Ngee Khiong's site (this post). I like the color scheme, the different shades of grey with bits of clear purple. The weapons look good too, although I wish it had a more conventional shield. It doesn't really fit in with other kits from the UC era, as with most of the 00 Gundam M.S. designs, but it should look good with Exia. As 00 Gundam was the first series I watched all the way through when I was getting into Gunpla, I'll probably be excited for any MG from the series. Hope they make a MG Reborn's Gundam sometime soon!

Not sure which kit to start on when I get back. Maybe Crossbone? Or maybe I'll finally do the decals for RX-78-2.

Home for the Holidays

Back at home for my winter break, which is nice. Unfortunately that means I can't work on any GunPlas. However, I picked up a couple new kits (Shown in bad photos taken with my phone!) Looking forward to Crossbone X-1, looks like a nice, but small, model. Got the Stamen on an impulse buy at Japan Town because it was on sale. It's an older kit so I'm not sure what to expect! Have a nice holiday everyone!

Blue Frame Complete

Finished the build for my Astray Blue Frame. I tried out the clear green eyes with a silver backing method, which didn't work out the best. The green was still too dark (maybe it's the paint: Tamiya X-25) and maybe the silver wasn't reflective enough. Painted over with another green (not clear) and it turned out well. Painting the fingers white was annoying, wish Bandai had engineered multiple parts for each finger. I know the action base included is meant just for sword, but I figured I could just use it for the whole model. It's a little wobbly and it can't do many poses, but it beats just standing there.

Painted the pilot inside as well, turned out alright (not like it's ever seen anyways). Picture is a little out of focus...

Posing with Tactical Arms II in massive sword mode (It's basically impossible to pose it correctly, the thing is so heavy). Gatling mode is also hard to pull off, just too awkward to hold...

Out of the Blue...

Started work on the Blue Frame Astray. Have the torso, waist, both arms and shoulders done. Working on the legs now. Waiting to do the head and the hands as I'm waiting on some paints. I need a better white paint for the bits on the fingers and I need a lighter clear green paint and a metallic silver paint for the eyes and sensors (as recommended by readers gppf and chubbybots). Thanks again for the tip! Not sure how it'll turn out, but I thought I would try. Might end up just using the sticker if I mess it up though ^^;

God Gundam Complete

Finished up God Gundam GF13-017NJII yesterday. Added only a few decals since there aren't really that many places to add anything (aren't many open, flat surfaces). I applied the ones shown in the manual as well as one to the shoulder and some to the ankle armors. The least amount of decals I've done on any MG, but I think it works well with this guy.

Finished up with a good layer of topcoat. Before applying I wasn't too thrilled with this kit (cheap plastic, old design, etc) but the topcoat really added a nice touch. The plastic looks better (a lot less shine) which brings out the colors more.

Because there are lots of screws, most of the joints are a little stiff. Makes it a little hard to pose, but it's better than loose joints! Overall, good kit. One of the cheaper MGs as well.

God Update: Head + Core Lander

Just finished the core lander and the head for God Gundam. A package came today with lots of hobby supplies (which included various color Tamiya clear paints) so I decided to try and paint the eyes instead of using the sticker.

I first used only the clear paint, with black around it. This was way too dark with the rest of the head put together, since no light got in. So I had to repaint the eyes a light green (normal, not clear), then go over with clear for a glossy effect. Still came out too dark, so not sure if I should do this again.

The clear green (and other colors) aren't the easiest to use. They're thick and leave brush streaks when applied. So to get a solid coat (seen on the cockpit of the core lander) you just have to heap the paint on by dabbing, no brush strokes.

Yay learning.

GM Complete

Put the last bit of decals on RGM-79 GM yesterday or so, then topcoated the whole model today. Looks pretty good! I thought the decals might clutter the basic design, but they aren't that intrusive. Besides the Jack Halloween emblems the decals are pretty minimal, but enough to add a finishing touch.

Had a few hiccups with spraying: didn't dust enough beforehand (little bits get stuck on), some topcoat solution pooled in a few places (had to wipe off and reapply). Still getting the hang of it. Also, went through my first can, good thing I had another!

... God Gundam created a body for itself. Actually maybe the first month... I've had this kit sitting here for a while. Regardless, got the torso and waist completed for God Gundam. It was quite a different build style on account of the whole Action Frame deal (one screw to hold the torso to the waist). All the joints, even the waist flaps, feel sturdy (which is good because the waist is usually loose on some models).

Because it's an old kit the plastic seems worse quality and the details aren't as defined. Some panel lines, like on the front yellow piece, weren't molded very deep. I had to cut with a hobby knife new lines so that the ink would stick. Sort of annoying... Also the vents didn't take panel lining very well.

All in all, seems like it should be an interesting and unique kit. Next up: The Core Lander, then head (although I'm waiting on some hobby supplies so that might be delayed).

Kits Acquired: The New and The Old

Got my MG Gundam Astray Blue Frame a couple days ago. First impression: very large box (about the same for Unicorn I believe) and there aren't really enough runners to fill the entire box, there's a lot of extra space. Not quite sure it needed such a big box, but hey, more impressive to look at. Looks like a very nice kit.

Also received another kit cheap-ish (or so I thought) off of ebay, an MG RGM-79Q GM Quel from Zeta Gundam. It's a very old kit (from 10 years ago). Because I'm used to new kits where Bandai has made many improvements on their production values and engineering, this kit is... disappointing. Shown in the photo is one of the two purplish runners. No where on the actual kit is it supposed to have this color. Instead the purple parts correspond to different color areas on the model (black shield, dark blue outer armor). So... I suppose I have to paint the pieces on those 2 runners, unless I don't have the right colors, then I paint ALL the runners. Also the clear visor piece wasn't even orange, just clear... Now I need to get clear orange paint. Never again old kits, never again...

Between Blue Astray, God Gundam, and the fail kit Quel, not sure which is next. Probably God. Also, still working on RGM-79 decals and topcoating.

Haven't seen the series yet, but from what I've seen so far from G Gundam, it's weird. As a result, this M.S. has no conventional weapons. Just some shining hands...

Haven't built the bazooka (have one from RGM-79), the Gundam Hammer (I will eventually... but all those spikes... so many nub marks...), or the Beam Javelin (waiting on some clear red paint). I've been watching the original Mobile Suit Gundam a bit. Why did they have to include the little compartment on the waist that holds the heat proof blanket thing... The damn door always falls open... Is it even that important?!

Progress on the RX-78-2 Ver.2 kit. Like I thought, building the parts I've already made from the RGM-79 is a little boring, actually a lot boring... However, still worth it cause the Core Fighter is completely new and neat. Great how it folds up into a little Core Brock.

Exia, Exterminating the Plastic Shine

Exia was a little more complicated to Topcoat due to all the clear pieces. Nemo had the clear orange visor to take off, but that was minimal. Exia has those clear green circles on the legs, arms, head, and chest. Actually, they weren't that bad to remove. The "new material" strips (holographic plastic), however, I didn't even try to take out, since most are embedded well in the build of the kit. I tried to cover the arm loops with tape, but it didn't work out so well... Good thing the fogginess isn't too bad.

Nemo Gets Decal Love

Also, Topcoat. Decals aren't so great on Nemo. I mean, they're simple, so it's not so impressive. Also, stickers and dry decals were the only option. I've been spoiled by water slide... They might take longer, but stickers are really annoying to cut out too... and they leave that border!

Mk-2 Gets Topcoat Mk-2

Continuing with the Topcoat extravaganza, RX-178 gets the second round of Topcoating. Since it was the "special edition" kit which featured water slide decals as well as shiny plastic, the topcoat went on a little differently. Kind of like it better, it's still shiny in a way, but it's dull... I don't know, it's just nice.

First Topcoat

Used Topcoat for the first time. Again, still learning new things. Learned not to spray from too close as "pools" of the Topcoat solution formed at various parts of Unicorn creating unsightly bubbly residue. Had to scrape it off, which didn't help much in terms of looks. After a second coat (this time with knowledge acquired) the model seems to have recovered somewhat.

The feel of the plastic changed more than I thought it would. It really does feel like ceramic or something, which is interesting. After Unicorn, had to the rest of my finished kits...

Also, got a Unicorn gashapon figure with Dengeki Hobby Nov. issue. Panel-lined it cause it looked like crap! Also the magazine told me to!

RX-78-2 GET

Just got this RX-78-2 Ver. 2.0 MG kit in the mail today. Might be a little dry to build since the GM 2.0 is basically the same frame (except the head, waist, weapons, and a small leg armor on the front). It has a core fighter though, so that should be fun and new. What can I say? I just needed to have the original Gundam.

Finally got around to taking some photos since I finished this a couple of days ago. The Ver. 2.0 frame is really nice articulation wise, like I said before, but it really showed during posing. Not much equips for GM here, short little Beam Spray Gun, Hyper Bazooka that barely attaches to the back. But it makes sense, given this particular mass produced MS. My only problem is that the armor plates behind the ankles, they always seem to fall off when the foot is moved or rotated.

I have some water decals for this kit, not sure if I'm going to apply them all since the basic look is nice, but I might.

RGM-79: Update!

Swell progress on MG RGM-79 GM 2.0. Liking very much this model, so far. Perhaps my fav? The inner frame is very detailed (pistons and whatever) and the articulation is superb. Guess that's what you get when you upgrade to 2.0. Want a RX-78 2.0 now... The hands. Wow, articulation for each finger. Much better than manually cutting each one! Also, Core Brock. Neat.

I meant to update the blog with progress shots of MG MSA-003 Nemo here, but never got around to it. So thar it is completed. Hrmm, what can I say. Nice stable kit, good joints, minimal equips. Cockpit hatch is hard to open, the upper part is supposed to pull out so it can swing up. Basically no way to pull it out without just taking off the armor piece. Yet to apply decals. No water transfers for this one, so I'm not sure if I will even try the stickers, hate how they leave a border...

Side by side comparison. Srsly, looks pretty similar.

Asmodian Templar. So far, so good. Possibility of burn out: Medium. Must be mindful of studies.

UPDATE: Not playing anymore, just got too grindy. Might look into it again if they update with actual Crysis-like graphics.

Unicorn Decals

Took a while to apply all the decals (there are like 100+... ugh). Chose to get the water slide decals instead cause I liked the ones from the Mk 2 so much. Messed up more times than I wanted (After applying Mr Mark Setter the decals somehow got knocked off and ripped). Nice thing about buying water slide is that there are the original decals and stickers as back up.

So yah, here pics. Destroy-mode head fondness has grown. Maybe topcoat?

Just finished some Unicorn. Finally did it. Maybe topcoat it? Don't want the little clear bits to fog up though. Have some water decals for it too. Destroy mode incoming.

Progress on MG Unicorn. So far, so good I suppose. The separating horn I painted yellow inside, however, when closed the yellow is visible and the horn doesn't close fully. I liked the non-Destroy mode head better so I just swapped in the one piece horn instead. All betta.

Torso and right arm done, working on left arm. Also shown is my way of organizing all the pieces to a major component before building it.

Finally got my Mr Mark Setter from my HLJ delivery which enabled me to finally put the water slide decals on Mr RX-178. I must say, water slide decals are so easy. I love them. I ordered a decal set for the MG Unicorn and my RGM-79.

Finally got all the decals on. Ugh, dry decalas are such a pain. I only messed majorly a couple of times and a lot of them are crooked. The stickers went surprisingly better, but also with a couple of hiccups. Learned something, use tweezers! It was a learning experience fo sho.

Finally got the last leg and hip unit built.

Just have to build the weapons and shield now. Then all the decals and such, fun fun fun.

I'll have a size comparison between the 3 MGs eventually. Exia seems to be in the middle.

It's a good show, yeah? However, I think watching it consecutively could possibly lead to paranoia and hypochondria of rare deadly diseases.

Just a thought, how's that for a diagnosis. I don't think that is one... maybe a thesis? FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

This is just a personal blog I suppose for my GunPla (Gundam Plastic Models). I hear it's all the trend, this blogging thing. I plan to infrequently update this, or perhaps very rarely as I don't think anyone will visit this blog anyways.

On that note, here are my completed Master Grade (MG) model kits: Wing Gundam Ver. Ka and RX-178 AEUG Titans. The former is plagued by poor panel lines and botched decals, and the latter is still awaiting decals.

Working on MG Exia now, will post pics right after this...
